What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when taken in proper amounts, give your digestive system a health benefit. They are essentially good bacteria -- bacteria which are beneficial for your body. Yogurt, specially formulated powders or drinks and supplemental pills are a few of the sources of probiotics. They help in the proper digestion and absorption of foods and boost up the immune system.

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that occur throughout the digestive tract. Since it is a producer of B vitamins, it helps the body in the completion of its digestive process, specifically in the absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium and other vitamins and minerals.

Reportedly, probiotics may also help reduce the severity of food allergies and intolerances, and may help reduce the severity of symptoms in both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. Other claims are made that probiotics strengthen the immune system to combat allergies, excessive alcohol intake, stress, exposure to toxic substances, and other diseases. There are more reports that these bacteria also help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
